Engineered Flooring: Can be used on grade, above and below grade. Engineered wood is more
dimensionally stable so it can be installed in areas where solid wood is not compatible due to
moisture. Engineered strip, plank and parquet are glue down applications over various subfloor
materials. Some engineered strip and plank can be nailed down which requires a wood subfloor.
Engineered includes floating floors where tongue and grove are glued together, but the floor is not
anchored to the subfloor.
Solid Wood Flooring: Can be used on grade and above grade, but not below grade. Solid wood
should be in a moisture controlled environment. Solid wood strip or plank is nail down only and
requires a wood subfloor. Solid wood parquet can be glued to a variety of subfloor materials.
Prefinshed: Most, but not all, engineered products are prefinished at the factory, and some solid
products are available prefinished. Prefinished flooring eliminates the dust and noise factors
involved in the job-site finishing process.
Unfinished: This finish is applied at the place of the installation, giving you unlimited possibilities
for customizing your floor's color, as well as the ability to choose the type of shine you prefer.
Laminate Flooring: Laminate flooring provides an upscale appearance with the characteristics of
real wood. It is easy to care for as well as scratch resistant. Most, but not all, installation is done
without glue, using a click system and is not anchored to the subfloor.
Species: More than 50 domestic and imported wood species are used for wood flooring. The most
common of these are Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, Pine and Hickory/Pecan. Other woods that make
beautiful flooring are: Ash, Beech, Birch, Black Cherry, Douglas Fir, Mesquite, Walnut, Brazilian
Cherry, Australian Cypress, Jarrah, Mahogany, Merbau, Padauk, Purpleheart, Teak, Wenge and
others.
The decision on your wood floors starts with the types available. Each type of wood has its advantages. One should consider each type of wood available and the durability needed in the area it will be installed.
